Cross-Border Art Exchange Project: Austria / Liechtenstein

The planning and preparations for the Liechtenstein Triennial 2021 not only resulted in a comprehensive exhibition of artistic work in and around Liechtenstein, but also served as the seed for a cross-border art collaboration. Artist Yoly Maurer, who is active in both the Liechtenstein Artists’ Association (Visarte) and the Austrian Association of Visual Artists, conceived the idea of a cross-border collaboration between artists and their respective associations and professional organizations.

During an art presentation of works by several female artists exhibiting at the Liechtenstein Triennial 2021 at Altelier62 in Schaan, the two artists Yoly Maurer and Ursula Wolf developed the idea for the IDENTITIES project and invited additional female artists from the professional associations in Austria and Liechtenstein to join them, forming a cross-border collective of female artists.
The title IDENTITIES already points to the diversity of viewpoints, perspectives, forms, and approaches expressed both through the choice of the two exhibition venues and through the artists themselves and their works. In Schaan, the works on display are presented en passant in the window of Atelier62. Visitors are confronted with art not only during the scheduled events but also in their daily routines as they walk or drive by.

The six artists—Klara Frick, Linda Gaenszle, Lilian Hasler, Yoly Maurer, Renate Polzer, and Ursula Wolf—each created one two-dimensional and one three-dimensional work on the theme of IDENTITIES, in accordance with the guidelines they jointly established. Their approaches to the theme and the resulting works are as diverse as the six artists themselves. This diversity of the theme IDENTITIES is also reflected in the range of techniques, materials, and modes of expression used: the artistic tapestry, which defines identity through a gaze toward ancestors—the frottage, which makes visible the past, stripped of one’s own identity—the film projection, which depicts a virtual form of identity—the installation as a staging of communication between identities and the city as identity—and the painting as a means of expression for the search for and discovery of identity.
